FULLERTON - By the amount of perspiration falling across the face of San Marino High first-year tennis coach Melwin Pereira, it would have appeared his boys' team was locked in a heated struggle in Friday afternoon's second round of the CIF Southern Section Division I playoffs. Yet, the only discomfort his Titans felt came from the mild 75-degree weather, as San Marino breezed to a quarterfinal berth with a 12-6 victory over Troy. “With me, it's not about winning or losing, but execution,” Pereira said.

After running roughshod over its CIF Southern Section Division II adversaries en route to a division championship on Friday, the San Marino High boys' tennis team will now see how it fares against the rest of Southern California's best. The Titans will host La Jolla Country Day on Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the first round of the CIF/USTA Southern California Regionals Championships. The Titans (19-0) are fresh off a championship playoff run in which they lost just seven sets in five matches, including Friday's 13-5 finals win over Palm Desert.

MONROVIA - There was an overriding question for the San Marino High wrestling team heading into Tuesday afternoon's Rio Hondo League season finale at rival Monrovia High. The mystery revolved around the last time the Titans had won a league championship, which baffled many long-time followers, the team's co-coach, Joe Gallardo, and the wrestlers themselves. Before the match, San Marino athletic director Andrew Gayl confirmed that the last championship for the hungry program was earned in 1998.

SAN MARINO - What had the feel of a scrimmage certainly had the look and scores to back it up Wednesday afternoon. A sharp-looking, senior-loaded San Marino High boys' volleyball continued its mission to rebound from a subpar 2012 season by knocking off young and inexperienced Pasadena Poly, 25-6, 25-19, 25-14, in nonleague play. With the victory, San Marino improved to 2-0 and will finish its three-matches-in-three-days beginning to the 2013 campaign Thursday at Burbank. “This is a great way to start the season to see what we can do,” said San Marino second-year Coach Scott Barton, whose team is virtually at the halfway point of wins in comparison to last year's 5-14 squad.

SAN MARINO - Coming into its showdown with San Marino High on Friday night, the South Pasadena girls' basketball team had only suffered four losses all season, and only one of those came in Rio Hondo League play. San Marino dealt South Pas its only league loss in a one-point thriller. This time around, the outcome changed dramatically, as the Tigers dominated the Titans, 46-19. “We just had to come out and play our game and let things speak for itself,” South Pasadena Coach Tammy Lai said.

SAN MARINO -- There's a hunger for perfection only two-time divisional championship teams can understand. So even after posting 6-0 and 6-2 wins in their first two doubles sets Thursday afternoon, Larissa Phillips and Vivian Le were unsatisfied. “They said, 'We want to redeem ourselves [after a 6-2 win]. We just lost two games,'” San Marino girls' tennis Coach John Christopher said. “I said, 'OK, whatever. You guys are really good. We got to let the younger players practice a little more.” With that competitive spirit, the Titans have won two straight divisional titles.

SAN MARINO -- With a playoff berth on the line, the San Marino and La Cañada high football teams each leaned on their strengths. For La Cañada, it was the play of quarterback Matt Jones. For San Marino, it was the run game, led by Kwame Do. Behind a stellar ground attack, San Marino defeated La Cañada, 37-13, at home on Thursday. The win improved the Titans to 7-3 overall and 4-1 in Rio Hondo League to clinch second place in league and an automatic playoff bid. La Cañada dropped to 3-7 overall and 2-3 in league to likely finish its season.

SAN MARINO - When a high school football team wins three consecutive games to open a season, including one victory by a nine-touchdown advantage, one has to ask certain questions. Such as, just how good is this team? “I don't know what 'this good' means,” said San Marino High Coach Mike Hobbie. “We're good enough to beat the three teams we've played, and that's it. Nothing more than that. It is a cliché, but I don't look down the road.” While projecting the Titans' future success may be easier said than done, they looked pretty darn impressive during a 63-0 romp over Nogales at home on Friday.

SAN MARINO - Jeff Bain refused to get frustrated. Bain, a junior pitcher for the San Marino baseball team, got the start on the hill Tuesday for the Titans in their CIF Southern Section Division IV wild-card contest against Fullerton. When it was apparent that Bain wasn't getting strike calls on his breaking pitches, he didn't get flustered and instead went with his hard stuff. And when the right-hander hit three batters, he didn't let that upset him and he worked through it. Bain ended up turning in a complete-game gem for San Marino, throwing a one-hit shutout to help the Titans earn a 2-0 victory at home.

Hopes were San Marino High wrestler Julian Flores was on his way to a championship one day through the CIF State Meet. The freshman 120-pounder advanced to the semifinals of the championship round with three wins Friday, but saw his fortunes take a turn with a pair of losses in the championship and third-place semifinals before taking fifth place with a dominating 11-4 win over Madera High's Daniel Ruiz Saturday at Bakersfield's Rabobank Arena on...
