Good morning, readers. Today is Tuesday, September 18. Two scientists at Caltech will now have the opportunity to further pursue cutting-edge research.

Biologists Doris Ying Tsao and Dianne Newman have been named recipients of the National Institute of Health’s Director’s Award, the university announced Monday. The award comes with grant funding, which would allow the scientests to participate in research that could lead to scientific breakthroughs. Pasadena Sun

Two former administrators at Pasadena City College claim that a bribery lawsuit filed against them by a lighting contractor was retaliation for the contractor losing its contract. Rick Van Pelt and Al Hutchings were both fired in June following a raid the L.A. County District Attorney’s office. Pasadena Star-News

The last of five assailants accused in the kidnapping and attempted murder of a Pomona woman faces sentencing this week. Todd "Raider" Alcorn faces up to 42 years and eight months in prison. SGV Tribune
