What was a difficult season turned devastating Monday afternoon for Maranatha High quarterback Andrew Elffers.

The All-Area first-teamer was informed after an MRI that he had torn the meniscus in his right knee, requiring season-ending surgery.

"It's obviously difficult and disappointing news for Andrew. He's a leader on this team and was looking forward to his senior year," Maranatha second-year Coach Pete Karavedas said. "Andrew is man of faith and this is difficult to understand. But sometimes our plans aren't God's plans and we put our faith in him."

Elffers injured his knee during the first quarter of Maranatha's 63-7 home defeat to La Salle on Friday and continued to play until the second quarter, when he was advised by the team's trainer to sit out the rest of the game.Elffers has thrown for 677 yards this season and three touchdowns.
